Full
day tour from St-Malo with minivan + english-speaking guide/driver, from
400 euros:
Stop at "Caen War Memorial" situated on a place which suffered
heavily from the bombings and war misery. Inaugurated on 6th June 1988,
built on 3 levels, it uses a lot of audio-visual techniques to set the
Battle of Normandy into the context of WWII. You will see a not to miss
movie, which vividly recounts D-day as simultaneously experienced by both
the Allies an the Germans.
Arromanches: a litlle bath station with its floating prefabricated port
built in 1943 in England. Imagined by Churchill for helping the Allied,
it is the most incredible technical prowess of WWII.
Longues-sur-Mer: an impressive and rare example of the German defense
with its pillboxes and heavy guns still here.
The US cimetery and its 9387 burials overlooking Omaha beach where much
of the fighting took place.
Pointe du Hoc, a steep cliff dominating the Ocean. Heavy fighting took
place here, and the grounds remains emphatically pockmarked with bomb
craters.
Other places can be visited on request: from Ste-Mere-Eglise, Utah beach,
Bayeux (and its famous 11th tapestry), Pegasus Bridge (first french bridge
to be liberated),...
